[Solution] Hangouts Plugin not Working
Download and install the Hangouts plugin package again. Make sure the plugin is enabled. Under “Show”, click All add-ons. If you use Windows 8, switch to desktop mode to allow the plugin to work. Check your browser’s extensions. Turn off any that use “click to run”.
Google on Thursday provided an update for users who still rely on Hangouts to chat with friends and family. The search giant said in the first half of 2021, Hangouts users will be migrated to a free version of Google Chat — the Slack and Discord competitor currently available to enterprise users.
What happened to Google Hangouts in 2021?
Back in October, Google detailed how it would move users of its previous messaging app to alternate services in 2021. As part of the migration, Google has shut down classic Hangouts integration with both Google Voice and Fi.
Because remember, Most Google apps require you to be logged in and they could be logged in with their account on You. Tube just watching videos and ignoring your messages and Hangouts probably sees that as “active now”.

Classic Hangouts is being retired but will still be supported for a time. In the midst of the closure of Google+ due to security problems, Google has now released an updated timeline for the closure of the Google Hangouts messaging platform.
Now, it seems Google is finally pulling the trigger, with plans to eventually scrap Hangouts in favor of Google Chat and Google Meet sometime next year. According to a Google blog post, the company plans to transition all users from Hangouts to Chat within the first half of 2021, leading to the eventually dismantling of Hangouts as a whole.
Google also plans to remove Google Voice support from Hangouts early next year, meaning you won’t be able to take calls from Voice in Hangouts. You’ll have to use the dedicated Voice app for Google Voice texts and calls instead.
Google has been in the process of shutting down Hangouts for some time, and now, the app is losing its Voice and Fi integration. Currently, users can only use Hangouts to message individuals or groups with text. Video calling has essentially been removed and transferred over to Google Meet.
Google Hangouts is generally safe to use. Messages sent and calls made through Google Hangouts are encrypted, so your privacy remains intact. For your own safety, be sure to only answer messages and call requests from people you know and trust.
Is Google Chat replacing Hangouts?
The switch from Hangouts to Chat will take place gradually, and there will be a period of time when both messaging services are still available. Eventually, all free users and Workspace customers will be moved over to Chat. Once that’s done, then Chat will fully replace Hangouts.
What will happen to hangouts conversations after the transition to Gmail?
Google will automatically migrate Hangouts conversations during the transition, along with contacts and saved history. When the transition is complete, the free version of Google Chat will be available as an integrated experience in Gmail and as a standalone app.
