What does backspace do in outlook?

In Outlook 2016 and Outlook for Microsoft 365, a “feature” called the backspace-to-archive keybind was introduced. It allows one to archive messages by selecting them and then pressing the Backspace key. Folks who don’t like this feature can turn it off by editing the Registry on their computer.

Another frequently asked question is “What happens when you backspace an email in office 2016?”.

In Office 2016, if you click backspace it moves the email to a folder called archive. Many users are doing this accidentally and their emails disappear. Sometimes they highlight 100’s “accidentally” and then there’s the “freak out” moment where they think they’ve lost everything.

It allows one to archive messages by selecting them and then pressing the Backspace key. Folks who don’t like this feature can turn it off by editing the Registry on their computer. Unfortunately, that edit disables the backspace key altogether.

1 In the left pane of the Outlook Mail (Preview) window, click the Deleted folder. 2 Click on “need to recover email? Retrieve messages that were recently deleted or emptied from this folder”.

Is it possible to Backspace to the archive in outlook?

Pressing the backspace key in Outlook and having it send the current email to the Archive is the dumbest thing ever. I had no idea this was going on, but it’s starting to make sense to me when I randomly have users complaining about emails vanishing. This will now be my go-to location to first check.
