Microsoft claimed that Edge was 112% faster than Chrome when it first came out. It’s hard to pin down how accurate this exact stat is, but plenty of users around the web have run their own tests and come to the same conclusion: Edge is faster than Chrome.
You might be wondering “Is Microsoft Edge a good alternative to Google Chrome?”
One way to consider this is if you are not a Google’s fan and wanted to get switch from its products to the alternate ones its a great alternative then having similar speed as that of the Google Chrome. There are tons of customization available for Google Chrome but that’s not the case with MS Edge you’ll get only Light and Dark themes options in terms of available themes.
The latest Edge is really faster than before and can be considered as equal to Google Chrome, if not higher, in terms of browsing speed. The reason is evident. The latest Edge browser from the Microsoft is based on the chromium engine, the same engine on which Google Chrome is based on.
Edge’s UI is sticky in comparison, as was Firefox’s for years – lots of little delays and stickiness for routine UI operations. (Now, the new Firefox “Quantum” seems far quicker and slicker than before, better than Edge, and maybe as good as Chrome.).
Another thing we asked ourselves was; should Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome share the same browsers?
Sharing the same underlying browser (Chromium) won’t change what Google and Microsoft decide to deliver through their proprietary browsers. Google’s Chrome will continue to favor performance and ease-of-integration with the rest of Google’s ecosystem. And with the switch to Chromium, Microsoft Edge will become more agile.
Does microsoft edge or chrome use more cpu?
Based on our ten tab test, Google Chrome consumed 537.6MB or 25% more RAM than Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge, however, used 0.8% more CPU power compared to Google Chrome. Again, the CPU usage varied wildly between 0.1% and 9.8% for both browsers.
When I was researching we ran into the query “Does MS Edge use a lot of CPU?”.
One source stated 3) You can now change Microsoft Photo back to the default app for pictures. This totally fixed my problems with MS EDGE using huge amounts of CPU. You will see a spike when you first start it, but give it several seconds to get into steady state and CPU usage is slightly higher but nowhere close to more than 10% [depending on your CPU of course].
Why does YouTube use more CPU on edge than chrome?
I guess this difference in CPU usage is because You. Tube is defaulting to VP9 in Chrome (which most likely has to be software decoded, since there aren’t that many VP9 hardware decoders out there). Edge though doesn’t support VP9, so it uses H.264, which can be hardware decoded on many devices, thus not having to decode on the CPU.
When we were writing we ran into the question “How much CPU usage does Chrome use?”.
Chrome: 39.0% Edge: 27.4% Edge does seem to be a little more efficient in terms of HD video playback. Although, honestly, I’m not going to write home about 12% CPU usage if I’m watching a Youtube video. Plus, Edge will no doubt take up a lot more CPU when you’ve loaded it up with extensions.
