And also how many do you need to defrag your hard drive per week? Yes, it does so automatically, at least for HDDs.
This of course begs the question “Do I need to defrag Windows 7 manually?”
One way to think about this is if you’re running Windows 7 or later, or you have SSDs, you do not need to defrag manually. To you and me, a file on your disk is a single thing.
No, Windows is not foolishly or blindly running a defrag on your SSD every night, and no, Windows defrag isn’t shortening the life of your SSD unnecessarily. Modern SSDs don’t work the same way that we are used to with traditional hard drives.

“Defragging” is short for de-fragmenting. It’s a process run on most hard drives to make accessing the files on that disk faster . In years past, it’s something you would do periodically, as files on the disk became more and more fragmented over time (hence, the term “defragmenting”).
Type Defragment and Optimize Drives into the taskbar search, and press Enter. Highlight the drive you want to scan and click Analyze. If the results of the analysis show less than 10% fragmented, an optimization is likely not necessary. Does your analysis results show higher than a 10% fragmentation? Highlight the drive and click Optimize.
How often should I defragment my hard drive?
With the exception of SSDs, a disk defragmentation should be carried out weekly or, at the very least, once a month. Again, this is determined by the size of your hard drive and the daily use of your computer.
This of course begs the inquiry “How many times do you DeFRaG your hard drive per week?”
Yes, it does so automatically, at least for HDDs. I believe the default setting is once a week. SSDs get Trimmed, not defrag’d. I don’t know what the default are for those. I manually defrag once in a while.
