By quitting, Sammy had left his manager shocked and created problems for himself. Sammy may have wanted something he deemed more substantial to be his reason for his exit from the store, explaining his use of the girls. As he left the store, Sammy was questioning his newfound independence and control.
Like the story A&P, Sammy made a huge decision to quit his job due to his boss being rude to three young girls wearing bathing suits. John Updike used several literary elements to make the story stand out and for people to relate to Sammy.
Sammy does not want to be referred as a ” sheep “, someone that follows, instead he wishes to do things on his own. Sammy begins the story by describing the three girls in bathing suits who have walked into the A & P grocery store.
Why did Sammy leave Stokes?
Stokes had a wife and kids, whereas Sammy was only nineteen years old. With this enlarged opinion of his maturity, he may have seen himself as independent and ready to be an adult, causing him to make impulsive decisions. > Finally, Sammy quit to display his growing independence and mental transformation to adulthood.
