What happens if you open an Excel file with more than 1 million?
Excel file with more than 1 million rows will not even open. The recommended max for an excel file is a little above 1m rows. So for a data sheet of say 2m rows, I will recommend an alternative. Making filters, search, etc can take a lot of time for say a 1m row sheet. Your computer will be hanging.
Is 400K a large file size in Excel?
All I can tell you is that 400k really is not a large Excel file. I have workbooks which exceed 20MB & present no such problem.
Depends on your machine and version, and what’s in the workbooks. I have a fair few workbooks over 50MB, and one or two over 150MB that I have to use occasionally (not by choice and I didn’t build them).

Excel has a “used range” for every sheet in your workbook. The larger this is, the bigger the file size becomes. For new & blank Excel files, the used range is only cell A1. But as you work on a file, it will increase to represent the rightmost column and furthest row that you’ve edited or formatted.

Yes, the file is in fact 313.5 MB. There are 383,000 rows and 112 columns. It is plain text, the font is the default Calibri. There are no other colors or formatting. There are no formulas, which is why I do not understand why it takes 3-5 minutes to open the file, and is very difficult to work with. Excel will freeze while working on the file.
