Although there are three different Lightroom versions, they may be used together. Lightroom Classic CC offers automatic access to Lightroom CC with a subscription to Photography Creative Cloud.
Another thing we wondered was, are there different versions of lightroom?
Here is what my research found. now there are two current versions of Lightroom – Lightroom Classic and Lightroom (three if you include the no longer available to buy Lightroom 6). Then there’s the name changes. Adobe changed the name of Lightroom CC (2015) to Lightroom Classic CC in October 2017, then to Lightroom Classic (dropping the CC) in May 2019.
One query we ran across in our research was “What is the most recent version of Lightroom CC?”.
Well, from there, Lightroom CC 2014 was rolled out, which was equivalent to version 5.4 of LR standalone. The big release was Lightroom 6 (CC 2015), which is the most current version, the latest release being Lightroom 6.6.1, or Lightroom CC 2015.6.1 if you use the cloud version of the software.
If you subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan, you are entitled to both versions of Lightroom in addition to Photoshop CC. When you download or update your desktop version of Lightroom Classic, be sure to select the version circled at the bottom of the image below.

Does Adobe Lightroom have a future?
Adobe have stressed their commitment to continuing the standalone version of Lightroom for the foreseeable future. Note: The standalone version of Lightroom is a little hard to find on Adobe’s website.
How much does Adobe Lightroom cost?
If you are new to Lightroom, the full version (priced at $149 from the Adobe website) saves you money, and if you already own Lightroom, then the upgrade (priced at $79) is even less, saving you a little over $100 over the same time period. As a standalone version user you get free upgrades until a full new version comes out.
, and financial considerations. If you are on a budget, and don’t need Photoshop CC, then it is definitely less expensive to buy the standalone version of Lightroom. At the moment a new version of Lightroom comes out approximately every 18 months. At $9.99 a month, the subscription service would cost you $179.82 over that period.
What is the difference between Lightroom and Lightroom Classic CC?
The “old” software familiar to many shooters got a new name ‒ Lightroom Classic CC. According to Adobe, the main difference between an original and the latest Lightroom version is that Lightroom Classic CC is designed for desktop computers while Lightroom CC ‒ for mobile gadgets and it is connected with the cloud.
At the start of the Creative Cloud Lightroom was called Lightroom CC. Initially this change caused a bit of confusion over the final standalone version, Lightroom 6, and the subscription version. Even though the subscription version is a Creative Cloud product, the software installs on your desktop and all of your files stay there too.
