While exploring Google Earth’s 3D imagery, you will probably have noticed that even in the busiest cities, people are largely absent. This is because of the way the 3D imagery is captured.
Then, why don’t people appear on Google Earth?
Oh but they do – certainly in cities where the zoom level is higher. They are harder to spot because we’re not used to identifying humans from above so unless they are sunbathing, they are not so quite as easy to recognise!
This of course begs the question “Why can’t you see people on google earth?”
Google Earth is prevented from showing the face of any real person, living or dead. This explains why the face of Colonel Sanders (who actually existed), is blurred out on every KFC logo.

The house was demolished three months later but remains blurred in the aerial and street views.
Over time, Google has got better at removing moving vehicles from the imagery so the streets appear almost empty, and we never seem to see pedestrians at all. However, while exploring the 3D imagery in Dublin, Ireland we came across some people in the parks there.

Another thing we wanted the answer to was: can you see plastic in Google Earth imagery?
Most of the plastic is particulate and/or a bit under the surface so you can’t see it in the imagery. A number of groups are starting to focus on collecting more data about the gyre via expeditions and sampling – we’d love to see one or more of them produce maps that could be viewed in Google Earth.
