Your vision will seem hazy as your pupil will remain dilated for 24-48 hours after cataract surgery
Sunlight and artificial light will seem a lot brighter than normal as the dilated pupil lets in lots of light
You may notice haloes or a circle around light, particularly after multifocal lens implants; this will settle

One question we ran across in our research was “How will my vision be after cataract surgery?”.
Generally vision after cataract surgery is superb. With cataract surgery, the wonderful thing is that we can generally put an artificial lens in your eyes that not only replaces your cloudy natural lens, but it potentially allows you to see clearly without any glasses for distance and near objects.
Most people with healthy eyes who undergo cataract surgery report a dramatic improvement to their vision: brighter, clearer, more colorful. It’s great to be around these patients when they discover how well their ‘new eyes’ can see – one of the most rewarding aspects of being an eye surgeon.
One of the next things we wanted the answer to was what can I expect after cataract surgery?
Here’s what to expect: For the first night and day after your surgery, you can expect: Blurry vision: While your vision will be clear, you might see some blurring for a day or so. This is normal and will go away. Foreign body sensation: It might feel like something is stuck in your eye — resist the urge to rub your eye.
This begs the query “Should vision be 20/20 after cataract surgery?”
If the cornea is clear and there are no retinal problems that would preclude improvement in vision after cataract surgery, you have the potential for 20/20 after surgery. You should consult with your ophthalmologist as to what to expect after cataract surgery.
Straight after surgery, patients will usually see in soft focus. The following day vision should be clearer. Some patients see the improvement in several hours, though most take 24-48 hours. It can occasionally take 1-2 weeks for vision to settle while the eye adapts to the new intraocular lens implant (IOL).
When should I See my ophthalmologist after cataract surgery?
You’ll also need to see your ophthalmologist 1 to 2 days after your surgery for an eye check. For the first week after your surgery, you’ll need to focus on several “do’s and don’ts” so your eye heals properly: Don’t get water or soap in your eye.
Don’t scratch or rub your eye. Your eye needs time to heal from the surgery — even minor trauma from rubbing can cause damage. Do wear your eye guard while sleeping. When you’re sleeping, you’ll need to wear the eye guard you got. This way if you roll over you won’t put pressure on your eye. Do keep the area around your eye clean.
What can limit postop vision after cataract surgery?
Postop astigmatism, retinal or optic nerve disease can limit postop vision. Cataract: The final visual acuity after cataract surgery will depend on the overall health of the eye. If the cornea is clear and there are no retinal problems that would preclude improvement in vision after cataract surgery, you have the potential for 20/20 after surgery.
Most eye doctors recommend that you wait at least one month following cataract surgery before getting a new prescription. This is to ensure your vision has stabilized. Because most IOLs used in cataract surgery can only provide clear distance or clear near vision, you will need glasses to correct for whatever the lens doesn’t provide.
Why is my vision blurry months after cataract surgery?
The American Academy of Ophthalmology reports that some swelling can persist in the months after surgery, and that swelling can make your vision seem blurred. In most cases, that swelling will resolve as the eye heals.
What are the risks of cataract surgery?
The surgery can also worsen pre-existing eye conditions such as diabetes or uveitis (inflammatory eye disease), which can affect vision. There are three main types of IOLs you can choose to replace your cataract. This can affect how much your vision will improve and whether or not you’ll need glasses.
